Hey Guys,

Today we'll be talking about the topic of rock music with or relating to transgenderism. We'll start with clips from the two films I think everyone knows and loves for mixing rock n roll and transgendered themes, Rocky Horror Picture show, and Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

Both a pair of my favorite movies that with some great humor and great music. As far as Hedwig goes, there is this once NYC Punk band called the toilet boys that either must've been inspired Hedwig or had some influence on John Cameron Mitch to make Hedwig, which way I don't know. This band is called, The Toilet Boys.

though we all know going back to the early days of punk all of this would probably not have been around if it wasn't for the New York Dolls.

But let's go to asia where there's a new trendshowing up in transgendered pop acts like Lady and Venus Flytrap from Thailand! I can't believe these girls are transgendered.

Also as covered in a previous post is Russian Talk Show host, Verka Serduchka.

As you see the openness in music is getting greater and I think this is a good trend for society. Plus, the toilet boys just plain rock.

Hey Guys,

Last weekend I did a couple of shows since I run a promotions outfit called, Fashionably Numb Music. During these two days of music two acts commanded the audiences attention with stellar performances that match most of todays greatest acts. There acts are The Phantasmagoria, and The Lab Rats.

The Phantasmagoria for a group of kids who most have just graduated high school are some of the best musicians and song writers I've ever seen. Just give them a listen on their myspace page and check it out yourself, but nothing really can show you a fraction of what their live performance brings.

As The Lab Rats, these Columbus Hip Hop veterans have always been a step above the pack and still find way to continually improve which is mind blowing. Here is the a music for their song, Devils Train.

Check out today's NOW!load for a new song from The Lab Rats not on their current release which is mighty tasty.

Hey Guys,

Now that the series on World music is over I've been thinking of many new articles to write about. I have stuff on transgendered musicians, Noise, Flstudio and Homemade Hip Hop beats all coming up so keep posted.

It's been awhile since I've really talked about what going in my cd player so I though I'd chat about it a little bit. I heard the Patton Oswalt cd the other day which was classic, now all I can think about is renting deathbed, the bed that eats people.

Awesome releases I've picked up recently include Three's new album, "The End is Begun". If your familiar with Three's mix of Prog Rock, Metal, and slight sprinkle of Folk/Pop elements will be surprised by how much more prog rock oriented this album is than their last few.

Here is a live video of them playing the lead single off the album, All that Remains:

Something Else I've been listening to is this comp of 90's dance music and I'm now readdicted to the song "Love You Down" by INOJ. So here's that infectious video from we were all younger healthier people.

Another Really awesome metal band (I havn't talked about metal in awhile) is Fall of Troy who have come out with their new album, Manipulator. I havn't seen any good quality videos of the new material yet, so in case your new to the band here's their music video from the first album. These guys are ferocious live, I highly recommend.

I got an email from a fellow WBGUFM staff member, English Teacher and World Music Director, David Dears. This email was about the musical acts I chose for my highlights here at Music is Now! I thought I touched on a enough cultural and musical issues in my response for it be some good content for a post. So check it out:

ORIGINAL EMAIL

" Second, take note that I hate rap and hip hop, but I'll play even that if
it's not in English and I have on many occasions. What I'm getting at here
is the video from Eastern Europe with the babe in a Dallas Cowboy
Cheerleader outfit rapping in fake snow. I didn't find it less than
awesome because I hate rap but because it was in English. And not only
that, she was trying, I thought, to mimic to some degree African-American
rapper accents. This suggests that she is going for the money in the
American/Anglophone market. Of course, this is nothing new or
incomprehensible, but isn't this just part of the global homogenization?
And doesn't it seem that they are putting money before their art?
David Sears
Folk & World Music Director"

My RESPONSE:

- As far as why I post obviously commercially adapted music as Stereoliza, is cause it's quite interesting to me as someone who studies pop culture and marketing. One can see globalization as a homogenization of western culture on the world, but I think it effect western culture just as much. This dialogue between cultures to create new form and meaning is something that has always interested me.

While it may cheapen it for a lot of people since this dialogue takes place in the commercial sphere. Although, I think this speaks well for the world when people demand being supplied to involved influence form other cultures similar to the success of MIA and Gogol Bordello show world influence on western taste, I include Matisyahu, Nelly Furtado, and many more artists who may or may not be foreigns who've had success in this dialogue. Does this make the music itself good or bad, that's an opinion thing I guess.

In the case of StereoLiza, it's interesting to see she's on a label and the music she produces which is a real off the mark adaptation of western pop forms. If this were to be marketed in America, I think most people would laugh at her strong accent and the really poor performance of pseudo urban identity when she raps. On the other hand, this is actually quite a commercial success in Ukraine which shows their interest in western pop. In pop culture we study a lot appropriation for national identity... a lot. This is what this is, Ukraine adapting Western pop but in a sense creating something uniquely Ukrainian despite the forms being presented. like in countries like Indonesia where Dangudt is the commercial pop, most westernized influences usually tend to be seen as left of field instead of overtly commercial.

stuff like that just sort of interests me.
And doesn't it seem that they are putting money before their art?

I feel that living in growing global consumer culture that the financial motive are hard to separate from anything. The world today is fixated on the idea of what you love being you job which inherently typing the idea of what you care about with your finances. To me there is nothing wrong with this, this is just the reality of todays cultural context. I'm pretty sure there are few examples where artists compeletly abandon their love for music but isn't there much easier ways to make a living other than selling out? I mean even some of the most commercial artists struggle, there still do it cause they like what they're doing. Exceptions always exist of course, and I like to believe the resulting music is the result of a lot of peoples work and in the is separate from the artist themselves and changes in meaning over time.

Hey Guys,

Sorry the last couple of days I wasn't able to post anything but I had to keep busy promoting my radio show on WBGU 88.1fm. Today we're doing brazil since I've worked with people from Brazil and apparently they have a sweet electronic music scene, so I'm gonna look into it a bit.

Bonde de Role is this synth rock band that's actually been getting a lot hype in these parts from many of the indie rock magazines, I remember reading about them in BPM magazine. They are very similar to MIA but a little more lo fi, it's really good.

Here is Seu George a really awesome Samba man from Brazil, I lov ethis folky Samba stuff like this.

Dj Marky is an awesome Drum and Bass DJ from the country

Without very much effort i found a very amazing crop of music already but i must prepare to continue my trip around the world, but definetley look more into Brazils scene, it's quite amazing.

Hey Guys,

This is kinda of a mile stone for Music is Now! post #40! MiN! has been up providing hype on music for the last three years even though more than half of the posts are from the last two months. We finally have the momentum we've been trying to build. So keep reading and we'll keep writing.

Continuing on with our trip around the world this month we will be hitting the Ukraine. I am interested in the Ukraine cause of the movie, Everything Illuminated which stared Eugene Hutz of Gogol Bordello Fame. The Ukraine music scene has a pretty colorful array of artists with delightful accents let's watch some videos.

Verka Serduchka is the crossdressing former talk show host who has sold over 150 thousand albums. I will be doing piece on famous transgendered music acts next month so this won't be the last time we here of Verka here at Music is Now! here is her video!

This next one is from Stereoliza who is one the Ukrainian arm of Universal records and is a weird mix of hip hop/pop with everyones favorite accents. Well watch the video and I'm sure you'll enjoy this a lot.

Wow... ok this is the coolest thing I've heard in awhile, Haydamaky. Very much like Gogol Bordello in their mix of punk and eastern block folk music except these guys have been doing it since 1991. Just watch the video and listen to how freaking awesome it is.

I can't really top that so I'm gonna leave it at that, see you guys somewhere else around the world next time!

Hey Guys,

Today we're going back to southeast Asia going to go hit up Thailand. Where I was surprised how emo/hardcore was charting so high on myspace, especially Sweet Mullet. Bands like that and Ritalinn do a good job competing with the infectious pop scene in Thailand where we be seeing many many examples of.

Ki KiraTira who we see in the vdieo below reminds me of someone like Michelle Branch or Ashlee Simpson who tries to kind of have a rock edge for a rock appeal.

On you tube Bird Tong Chai is a punk act I saw pop up a few times here is a video of one of their songs.

Then there is Lydia who appears to be a very big R&B star getting play on MTV and such.

Thailand has one of the biggest consumer cultures in Southeast Asia which explains the large pop and emo scene two of todays most consumer oriented genres. Well hope you enjoyed todays spotlight on Thailand.

Hey guys,

It's time to cover Puerto Rico, which is where my Dad hails from. From hanging out with him and all of the Puerto Rican portion of my family I've learned there are primarily three genres we're gonna talk about, Reggaeton, Salsa, and Bachata.

Reggaeton is like a Reggae/Hip Hop/Salsa hybrid most famous by the song "Gasolina" by Daddy Yankee. Here is a Video by another popular Reggaeton Act, Wisin Y Yandel.

Now in North America rhythm from Africa influenced the music and created genres like the Blues and R&B which would later evolve into Rock, Hip Hop, and countless subgenres. In the carribean this same influence took on a different form in Reggae and Salsa. Salsa has since infiltrated permeated into many sub genres like Reggaeton and Bachata. Here is a video of the King of Salsa the late great Frankie Ruiz.

Bachata is a sub genre that is very centered around guitars playing in the upper register unlike Salsa which is more based in Piano and latin percussion. Here is a video of Toke De Keda, a Bachata group.

I mean I know theres more types of music from the region like Merengue buy my knowledge on those isn't enough to really cover them. But enjoy and I hope you guys give some of these genres a try.

A Really awesome site that specializes in Guatemalan Rock Music is RockChapin.org , check it out to hear a lot of metal/rock bands from Guatemala.

Couple of really cool bands I've seen while scouting around on myspace are the following:

Malacates Trebol Shop - Yes, Guatemala Has Ska, and it's sweet!

Santiago Nino - Electronic Dance music artist from Guatemala, that's what's up!

Dominio Propio - Hardcore Punk band from Guatemala

Juan Carlos Alvarado - A BIG pop star in guatemala kinda remind me of kC and the Sunshine band.

Hey guys,

While this post will still remain about music around the world, I thought since I mentioned Aicha in my last post I'd discuss the many versions of the song for a post since it's like one of the most globally enjoyed pop songs I'm aware of that's not in English.

The song was originally performed by the Algerian singer Cheb Khaled.

Now to cover the many covers of this song the next best known one is probably by Danish Hip Hop group outlandish

Here is Tunisian Singer Wajdi covering Aicha on live television

Now for some Arabic Boy band covering the song

Here is a Turkish GUitar player covering the outlandish version

finally here is the version of the song by the Polish Pop band Magma, not to be confused with highly regarded prog band form france of the same name.

Hey Guys,

Today I will be doing Algeria, my interest in Algerias music began when I saw this video of Rachid Taha covering The Clash's, "Rock the Casbah". This is one of the greatest examples of globalization and the beauty of cultures clashing making very new interesting results, it's so awesome.

Ok, Enough about Rachid Taha, now to shake it up a little bit. I haven't been good about addressing the hip hop scenes in other countries so I'm gonna rectify this by spotlighting Komondoss a Algerian hip hop group. Although I think this group is based out of london.

this next video is homage to Algerian rap with videos of albums covers and shows from the Algerian Rap Scene.

For todays Now!load I found something super cool, Algerian Pop Star Cheb Khaled remix of Aicha which if I remember right was also covered by a polish pop band, Magma. Such a catchy song. Well come check in next time for more global music loving this august.

Instead of what I got planned I think I'm gonna make the trip to the Iraq Music scene for this post cause I think it'd be very interesting to check out. This is something I have a little less prior knowledge about so let's check it out. The first guy who seems to be near the top of the Iraq top music lists on Myspace is Majed Almuhandes you check out a video of him.

The red dress in this video by Mnein Abosek is pretty sweet, and I was interesting how this track had some pretty cool group background vocals. Iraq pop music is sort of like Bollywood music but there's definetley a difference which you'l be able to hear once I do India later on.

Haytham Yousef seem to have to what to me was the most accessible as he actually makes use of synthesizers in some of his songs, and a lot of these guys seem to have been at this for awhile. Makes me wonderwhat the state of music in Iraq was before the US entered in there. Either way this kinda shows you some examples of Iraqi pop music, not too detailed but interesting none the less!!!

Hey Guys,

Time for the next entry in our tour around the world where we will stop in Indonesia, but before we do so I would like to post a link to my previous entry about my trip to the Philippines cause well I covered most of the music I'm going to cover there in that post so I though I'd just say check that entry out instead of rehashing it later.

My Post on Filipino Music

Since we'll be in southeast asia for this post I thought it'd be a good time to bring up ChannelV which is a really big Music Channel for the region that plays mainly the stuff you'd see on MTV or VH1, but it occsionally spotlights bands from around the region. Also Channel V hosts Asia Music Platform, which is a big music networking site purevolume.com but focused on southeast asia. Chec it out.

Asias Music Plaform

Now to beign talking about indonesia when I was in Manila they had a really awesome band from indonesia on the Channel V Spotlight called Nidji, they are a newer band to hit the scene but they've had a lot of success and listening to them shows you why. Here's their music video.

One of my good friends, College Professor and Anthropologist, Jeremy Wallach spent a year in Indonesia studying the music scene and from working with him over the year during my undergrad studies as a Pop Culture/marketing scholar I learned about a lot of music in the area. Jeremy Wallach is set out to publish a book about his time in Indonesia, and another one of metal music, so keep an eye out for those.

One band he spent a lot of time with was Netral, he got to spend time with them and actually show up in one of their music video where the band perform in a cage. All I could find on youtube though was this unreleased video by them, Netral is still around and has opened for such acts as Nirvana and Metallica, so check them out.

Another Artist Jeremy talked to us a lot about was Inul Daratista, a pop star who sings a style of music called Dangudt. Her "sexed" up dancing was the cause of much controversy.

well that's the basic run down on some music highlights from indonesia, I think next time we'll either do a string of central american countries or Algeria. I'll be doing this global series all of of august my normal barrage of quick quipped reviews will return in septemeber.

Hey Guys,

Hey Guys, I'm going to finally talk about France. Although I decided to make this apart of a series to spotlight bands around the world. This post will be about France but I have places like like the Philippines (which I've discussed before), Indonesia, Guatemala, and Puerto Rico coming up and I'm sure there will be more by the time I am done. For this music series the Now!load will feature whoever is #1 on myspace for that country.

My interests in Frances music scene began with the Cult Rock Band Indochine who's been around since the mid 80's and have I think 15 albums. You can find more info on them in Wikipedia but here's the Music video for a single of their most recent album, the song is "Ladyboy" and it's super catchy.

The awesomeness of Indochines Cure-Esque rock prompted me to check out other french acts, and I found Pleymo who kind of remind me of the style of early incubus and other mid 90's metal/funk acts of this breed.

A name that kept popping up in my searches was Johnny Hallyday who was a very Elvis like Rockstar from 50s/60s it was definetley interesting to see something that always seemed so American in identity to reach France like this, though I shouldn't be surprised since I do study globalization.

The final artist I'd like to spotlight is Seb Martel is who is avery awesome singer/songwriter for fans of Sufjan Stevens and Andrew Bird who if you don't listen to already, you should. Here's the promotional music video for Seb Martel.

That's pretty much all I got as far as French Music, I think next time we'll visit Indonesia.

Hey Guys,

I'm gonna kind of delay the foray into French musical acts till next time again, cause I want to talk about hip hop. I wanted to talk about it cause I've been hearing T-Pain in too many damn songs.

But first watch this clip from a Hip Hop documentary about hyper masculinity in hip hop it's quite awesome

Hey guys,

I wanted to do a sort of run down on some awesome french music, but I'm gonna save that for old post 31. Today I'm gonna talk about some albums that have been driving me nuts that I heavily recommend.

St. Vincent - Marry Me: I mentioned this album before but since the last time I mentioned this album has super grown on me and is now my current addiction. If you need convincing just hear the title track and tell me your not hooked to this quirky female vocals centered pop album.

Bat For Lashes - Fur and Gold: If you thought St. Vincent is quirky, this album takes quirky to a very odd fantasy land mixing the very eclectic and odd arrangements kinda like Cocorosie but with the sort of tales of fantasy similar to a power metal band... I mean you'd just have to hear it, but it's so good. Actually since I"m listening to this as I write this, her voice remind me of Bjork but with more epic folky arrangements similar to Tori Amos but very quirkier.

Emerson Hart - Cigarettes and Gasoline: It's been a while since we've had a great pop rock album like this. Former lead singer of Tonic puts out his solo effort with some very huge potential singles with this very personal and touching debut. The song "ordinary" definitely sold me on this album.
