Hey guys,

It's time to cover Puerto Rico, which is where my Dad hails from. From hanging out with him and all of the Puerto Rican portion of my family I've learned there are primarily three genres we're gonna talk about, Reggaeton, Salsa, and Bachata.

Reggaeton is like a Reggae/Hip Hop/Salsa hybrid most famous by the song "Gasolina" by Daddy Yankee. Here is a Video by another popular Reggaeton Act, Wisin Y Yandel.

Now in North America rhythm from Africa influenced the music and created genres like the Blues and R&B which would later evolve into Rock, Hip Hop, and countless subgenres. In the carribean this same influence took on a different form in Reggae and Salsa. Salsa has since infiltrated permeated into many sub genres like Reggaeton and Bachata. Here is a video of the King of Salsa the late great Frankie Ruiz.

Bachata is a sub genre that is very centered around guitars playing in the upper register unlike Salsa which is more based in Piano and latin percussion. Here is a video of Toke De Keda, a Bachata group.

I mean I know theres more types of music from the region like Merengue buy my knowledge on those isn't enough to really cover them. But enjoy and I hope you guys give some of these genres a try.
